On July 5, 1856, John married Eliza Jane Mize in Monroe Co. Indiana (Book 3 pg. 250). The marriage was performed by John C. Bennington.

In January 1858, John fathered Elizabeth Jane Bender who married Wm. G. Deckard July 22, 1881. Wm. Deckard died August 8, 1908 in Clear Creek, Monroe Co. Indiana. Billy Deckard was killed by a train. Elizabeth died after mistakenly eating toadstools. At the time, she was living in Mansfield Mo.

On March 16, 1860, John fathered WIlliam Troy Bender. At the time of the Census that year, he lived on a farm in Salt Cr. Township. Monroe Co. Indiana with Eliza, his daughter Elizabeth, and son Wm. Troy who was 5 months old. His real estate was worth $150 and his personal estate valued $250.

On September 20, 1861, John enlisted in Company G 31th Regiment of the Indiana Volunteers where he served as a private during the Civil War. His father-in-law, Troyles Mize, was in the same outfit.

On March 17, 1862, his son, John I. Bender Jr., was born. This child, who one source lists as having a middle initial of D, died June 14, 1863. .

In 1864, John fathered James Bender.

On December 8, 1865, John mustered out as a Sergeant. (364314)

In 1867, he fathered Martha F. Bender (Mattie) who married Scott Keown and died in Searcy Arkansas.

In March 2, 1868, he fathered David Henry Bender who was married twice. David's first wife's name is not known but his second was Ida May Bechold who wed on January 23, 1896 and died October 9, 1938 in Decatur Illinois.

In 1870, at age 36, John lived on a farm in Polk Township, Monroe Co. Indiana with Eliza 26?, daughters Elizabeth J. and Martha 12 & 3, and sons Wm. Troy, James, and David Henry 10, 6, & 7 mths. His real estate valued $500 and his personal estate $185.

Buried at Polk Township. Cemetery, a cemetery that was created during the construction of Lake Monroe in Indiana, lies a Sarah F. Bender who was born September 18, 1870 and died October 17, 1871. Her relationship to the author's family is not known though she lies with the related families of the Bender's. It is possible that she is the offspring of John's generation.

On March 21, 1874, John fathered George Jackson T. Bender who married Sarah Almira Greene and died of lung cancer June 2, 1956 at a VA hospital in Dayton Ohio.

In February 1876, John fathered Teresa Frances Bender. Due to their mother's illness, both Teresa and George were raised by Quill and Becky Knight. Treca married first David Hutton and later Adonirum Judson Black.

In 1879, John fathered Elmore Bender.

In 1880, at age 46, he is listed in the Census as living in Salt Creek Township Monroe Co. Indiana with Eliza 40, Elizabeth J. 22, Wm. Troy 20, Martha 13, David 10, George 7, Treca 3, and Elmore 1. The related Wampler and Mize families lived nearby.

After 1880, he went west to Missouri with John Harris Jr., Wm. Troy, and Mary Belle Harris Bender. In Camden Co. they parted. John continued on and settled near Mansfield Mo. where his daughter Elizabeth ("Lizzie" Mrs. Wm. G. Deckard) later lived and died.

John married a woman in Missouri named Emaretta M. ______. She was born in Kentucky in November 1825 and died April 1919. She is buried beside him.
