CITY'S OLDEST RESIDENT DIES, AGED 87 YEARS

Samuel Herrick, 720 Second ave., the oldest resident of Rockford, died Wednesday afternoon at his home after several months of failing health du to the infirmities of age. He had lived 84 of his 87 years in this city.

Mr. Herrick was born in Andover, Mass., Nov. 11, 1835, a son of Elijah L. Herrick and Hannah Abbot Herrick. Elijah Herrick came to Rockford in 128 with three sons, Ephriam, Elijah L., Jr., and William. The following year three sons, George, Edward and Samuel, and four daughters, Phoebe, Sarah, Martha, and Hannah, came to the city. About 1849 the father built a cobblestone house on Fourteenth ave. The father died in 1852, the mother in 1876. Samuel was the last survivor of his father's family.

Samuel Herrick was married to Mrs. Maria Davis Herrick in 1866 in Michigan. She died in 1879. Two daughters, the Misses Hattie ad Clara Herrick, survive. They reside at the Second ave residence.

Mr. Herrick was a cabinet maker during his active years. For many years he was clerk of the First Congregational church an held this office at the time First church was merged with Second Congregational church.

Funeral services, which will be private, will be held from the home at a date yet to be set. Friends are asked to omit flowers.
