He was the son of Hugh Herrin & Nancy Partlow Simril. During the Civil War he served in the 18th South Carolina Volunteer Infantry, The Catawba Light Infantry, Company H, as a Private. He was killed in action at The Battle of Clay's Farm Virginia.


He is listed in the book "Broken Fortunes" by Ranolph Kirkland under the South Carolina Dead in CSA Service 1861-1865 p. 318.
