Journalist. He was the founder of the Philadelphia "Public Ledger", which was the first daily to establish a pony express, and one of the first to use the magnetic telegraph. In 1847, it was printed on the first rotary press ever built. Following his sale of the "Ledger" in 1864, his son William J. Swain founded the Philadelphia "Public Record" in 1870.
