LaVern was born to Joseph and Myrtle Tolman Bohi, the third oldest of a large family that consisted of seven sisters and two brothers.

In 1938, she graduated from Sugar Salem High School. She later attended Ricks College for two years and graduated with her Teacher's Certificate. Afterwards, she went on to become a fourth grade teacher for Bancroft Elementary. This is when she met the love of her life John Leo Johnson.

After World War II, the two were soon married in the Idaho Falls Temple on June 5, 1947. They lived in the Tolson Hotel for the first few years of their marriage until they moved to Ogden, Utah, to find better work opportunities. John became a firefighter for the Ogden City Fire Department, and LaVern worked for the IRS. They had one child, and they fostered a Native American girl who would return to her families home in the summertime.

In 1962, John and LaVern signed up with the Children's Aid Society of Ogden. They adopted a tiny baby girl in 1963, who only weighed four pounds and ten ounces. Two years later, they would adopt a boy at eleven days old. The family later moved to Roy where they kept a garden.

She had become famous for her cooking and made the best chocolate cake anyone could ever ask for. In her free time, she could be caught playing the organ, reading books, crocheting, cooking, or watching the races. She was an active and devoted member to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for the entirety of her life.

LaVern is survived by children, grandchildren, and five sisters.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband; brothers Joseph Tolman Bohi, Howard Tolman Bohi, sisters Verena Eyre, Mary Bird, and grandchild Brian Facer.
