Mattie was baptized May 5, 1929, at the Lutheran Church, Herrick, South Dakota. Mattie was confirmed on March 6, 1939, at Mills, Nebraska.
Mattie attended public schools in South Dakota and Nebraska. She graduated from Koch's Beauty School, Norfolk, Nebraska. Mattie practiced in Ewing and Norfolk, Nebraska, where she started and owned Clip and Curl Beauty Shop in 1948.
On July 3, 1949 Mattie and William Carl "Jack" Niewohner were united in Marriage at Christ Lutheran Church in Norfolk.
Mattie was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, the Ladies Circle, Deacon Ministry, Braille Workers, Lifelight Bible Class, served on the Evangelism Committee and was a Sunday school teacher. She also helped with Meals on Wheels, was past President of Jefferson School PTA and a life member of the PTA, was a member of the VFW Auxiliary, past member of the Hospital Guild, a member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority, Norfolk Women's Club, past President of Norfolk Lutheran Women's Guild and was a Girl Scout Leader.
Mattie is survived by: children and their spouses, Tom and Pat Niewohner, of Wynstone, South Dakota, Nancy and Bill Walz, of Ashland, Oregon, Peggy Niewohner, of Norfolk, Nebraska, Connie and Ken Johnson, of Watertown, South Dakota; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Mattie was preceded in death by: parents and husband, William Carl "Jack" Niewohner on February 6, 2013.
Burial was in New Lutheran Cemetery, Norfolk, Nebraska.
