John Albert Williams was the son of Joseph Grubb Williams, 1829-1902, and Sarah Amanda Strawn Williams. He was born in Kirkville, Iowa. On December 29, 1881 he married Etha Melinda Dotts, also of Kirkville. They were married at the Methodist Episcopal Church in Kirkville, at the end of the service.

After the wedding they immediately left Iowa and travelled to California, where they lived for two years. During this time their only daughter, Ella Amanda Williams, was born on October 13, 1883. Her birth certificate say she was born in the Spokane area of Washington Territory, now known as Los Gatos, California. That does not make complete sense to me, but that is what the records indicate. John died of galloping consumption, or T.B.

After John's death, Etha and her young daughter, Ella, were called home to Iowa by her parents, Father Philip Dotts, and Mother Margaret Shawver Dotts. She returned to Iowa, and after a period of time, Etha married her second husband, John Dawson Funk.
