In the Spring and Summer of 1793, there were increased attacks on isolated settlers in Washington Co.TN. Col. JOHN SEVIER gathered a large unit of mounted militia and headed south to the Cherokee settlements and towns, and to the Battle of Etowah. Col. SEVIER left approximately the 25 Sept 1793. On the 10 Oct 1793,in the early morning, while Mr. WILLIAM LEWIS was away from home,a group of Indians attacked the Lewis Farm and killed Mrs Lewis and five of her seven children. One son escaped to report the attack at the Block House in Temple Hill, and one daughter was taken hostage.
The daughter was ransomed in Dec.1793 for a Musket, some shot and powder. She was about 2-3 years old at the time.
William Lewis remarried about 1794, to Sarah "Sally" last name unknown.(This William Lewis did not marry Sarah Reed.) They started another family and had six children. The two surviving children from his first wife were William Lewis Jr, born about 1778 and Mary "Polly" Lewis born about 1790.
The children of William and Sarah "Sally" Lewis, were Lucretia, (name from oral history only), born circa 1794, Elizabeth "Betsy", born 1795, Benjamin, born 1798, Hiram, born 1800, Russell, born 1804 and Kissiah, born 1807. All were born in Greasy Cove, Washington Co., TN.
William Lewis moved to Middle Tennessee, to the Cedar Creek area of White Co., TN in 1810-1811. His daughter Mary "Polly" Lewis had married Canada Rigsby in 1809 in Carter Co., TN. His son William Lewis shows up on the 1799 Tax Rolls for Greasy Cove, but there is no record of him after that. Lucretia Lewis married an unknown Julian, that left her with three sons. She does not appear on any record. Elizabeth "Betsy" Lewis married John Hutchings, Benjamin Lewis married Charity (last name unknown), Hiram Lewis married Elizabeth "Jane" C. Kirk, Russell Lewis married Delilah Moore and Kessiah Lewis married John Rigsby, the younger brother of Canada Rigbsy.
William was a farmer and woodsman. He had a registered Stillhouse located on Townsend Creek. William Lewis is recorded on the 1820 & 1830 Census records. In the 1820 Census there is a John Lewis and his family, living at the same location as William and his family. No relationship has been found.
William died in August 1838. Edward V. Pollard had transcribed and witnessed his last Will. In the William Lewis Will he names all of his existing children and his three Julian grandsons, who had been living with him. Benjamin Lewis was the Executor of his Estate. Benjamin took care of his mother, Sarah "Sally" Lewis, until her death on 2 Nov 1850.

No headstone for William or Sarah 'Sally' Lewis. It is thought they are buried in unmarked old "Tent" style graves
