Mrs. Chris Axtell Funeral Rites

Mrs. Chris Axtell of this city passed away August 30, 1940 and funeral rites were held Monday afternoon and interment was made in the Blair cemetery.

Mrs. Axtell, as Ella Augusta Matteson, was born November 2, 1884 on a farm seven miles northwest of Blair. When she was still an infant the family moved to Blair where she grew to womanhood and where on August 18, 1905 she was married to James Christensen; to this union two children were born, Russell L., of Blair and Mrs. Audrey Farrell of Storm Lake, Iowa. The husband died August 14, 1913.

On June 22, 1916 she married Burgess Sager and to this union three children were born. Two died in infancy, the other, John Arthur, still made his home with his mother.

On May 5th, 1932 she married Chris L. Axtell who with two of her brothers and two sisters and the remaining children mourn her death.

James was married to Ella A. (?)(b. ca. 1883, NE). He left behind two children, Russell (b. ca. 1900, NE) and Audrey G. (b. ca. 1914, NE ~ may have been born after her father's death).

1920 - Ella is now married to Burgess S Sager (Sager?)(b. ca. 1878, IA). Burgess, Ella, Russell, Audrey, and 2 y 5 month old nephew, George W Madison, were all living in Washington, Nebraska.

1930 - Ella is once again a widow and living in Blair, Washington, Nebraska. Living with her is her daughter, Audrey Christiansen (sic), her son, John A Sager (b. ca. 1920), her 16 year old niece, Thelma Mattson and her brother, George Mattson* (b. ca. 1880, NE) who is divorced. Note that Ella's parents were both born in New York.

1940 finds Ella still living in Blair and remarried to Chris Axtell** (b. ca. 1898, IA). Son, John Sagar, is living with his mother and step-father. Ella's son, Russell Christensen is living in Blair with his wife, Catherine (b. ca. 1903, MI).
