Son of Dexter and Roxana (Comins) Stockwell.

On 4 Feb 1862 Dwight mustered into service with Company D of the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, being credited to the quota of Spencer, Massachusetts. He gave his occupation as wire drawer and was 23 years, 6 months and 1 day old.

On 17 Sep 1862 Dwight was wounded at The Battle of Antietam.
He ended military service with the 15th Massachusetts On 26 Oct 1863 by transfer to the Veterans' Reserve Corps, mustering out of the 19th company, 2nd BN V.R.C. on 4 Feb 1865.

Dwight married Harriet A. Mason and they had two daughters. His wife and youngest daughter died.

Dwight Stockwell died on 10 May 1875 at North Brookfield, Worcester County, Massachusetts, a "suicide by shooting." He was 36 years, 9 months and 10 days old.

His only other child, daughter Clara, died a few years later of consumption.
