John J. Mapes, 85, of Pittsburg, died at 3:50 a.m. Monday, Aug. 1, 2005, at Cornerstone Village of Pittsburg.

He was born Dec. 3, 1919, in Weir, to Dan and Barbara Augusta (Hartman) Mapes.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II, where he served as Staff Sgt. and Radio Repairman. He was honorably discharged in 1945.

On Sept. 30, 1948, he married Allie M. Martin in Weir. She survives of the home.

He worked for the United Brick and Tile of Weir. He also worked as an installer and repairman for Southwestern Bell Telephone for 33 and a half years. He retired in 1983.

He was a member of the South Broadway Baptist Church and the Benjamin Fuller American Legion Post No. 64, both of Pittsburg.

Additional survivors include one daughter, Linda Joyce Matarazzi of St. Louis; one son, Dan Joseph Mapes of Skiatook, Okla.; one sister, Erma Hindman of Weir; five grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Samuel Mapes; and one sister, Evelyn Lair.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home of Weir with Rev. Martin Massaglia and Sister Ann Meyer conducting the service.

Burial will follow in Garden of Memories Cemetery in Pittsburg.

The Benjamin Fuller American Legion Post No. 64 will conduct the flag folding ceremony.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home, 104 W. Main St., of Weir.
