Darius H. Cox Died Here On Thursday

Darius Cox is dead. The most picturesque old Kentuckian in our community, known and liked by everyone within a radius of many miles, he passed away at 12:45 on Thursday afternoon at his home on South Mains Street. He was 88 years 10 months and six days old. And his twin brother, John, this week is lying near death at his own home in Lovington, Illinois.

The twins were born on April 27, 1849, in Anderson county Kentucky, their parents being Jeptha Preston and Marrah [sic] (Martin) Cox. There they grew to young manhood and on February 13, 1872, Darius was married to Malinda Ann Pearson who preceded him in death by 17 years. For 40 years they lived together in Kentucky and then in 1912 came to Blandinsville to establish their home and spend their remaining years.

During his 26 years here Mr. Cox became a well-known figure in the village. One of the best gardners [sic] to be found anywhere, he loved to work in the soil and make things grow. He liked to visit and to tell of his old home in Kentucky. His passing is mourned by everyone who knew him.

Of the nine children born to Mr. and Mr. Cox three died in infancy. Surviving are Mrs. Ida F. Thomas and George Cox, of Blandinsville; Robert L. Cox, of Moline; Flora M. Cox, of Macomb; James Thomas Cox of Selma, California; and Mrs. Margie Hansell, of Indianapolis.

Mr. Cox is also survived by his twin brother in Lovington; one sister, Mrs. Mariah Etta Elden, of Laurenceburg [sic], Kansas [sic]; 14 grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Mr. Cox was for 51 years a member of the Christian church, and services were held there on Sunday afternoon, the Rev. H. P. Kelly officiating. Entombment was in the local mausoleum.
