children of God.
THOMAS JEFFERSON DUNCAN (Sr.) was born in Tennessee.
He was one of 6 children . Siblings: James F. Duncan (1820–1880); Littleton Lytle Duncan (1820–1886); Ann Elizabeth Duncan (1830-1881); Samuel P. Duncan (1833 –?); Winney Jane Duncan (1833–1862).
He and 2 of his brothers left Tennessee to move to Arkansas in about 1850. They settled outside of Little Rock, in Saline County. He married his wife, Mariah Bullion there on August 15, 1853.
He mustered in as a Confederate Soldier for the Civil War in 1862, as a Corporal. He was in the 12th Texas Infantry, Co H.
After the Civil War they decided to move to Texas. They planned to move to Oatmeal, Texas, but the Indian uprisings were too dangerous, so he and Mariah and their children moved to Liberty Hill, Williamson County, Texas, instead.
In 1874, Thomas Jefferson bought property near Pilot's Knob on the N. San Gabriel River. This area is near Liberty Hill, Texas. At that time, land was selling or $3-$4 per acre.
Over the years, the family grew to include eight children: seven sons and one daughter. They included William Alexander (named after T.J.'s brother), who married Susan Jane Ogle Farris. John Franklin who married Della Epley, Thomas Jefferson Jr. who married first Mollie E. Bond, and second wife was Ossenia Stanford Horton. Mattie J. married Will Hunt. Robert E. married Mollie Dodson Taylor. James Wilson married Josephine Dodson. Joseph Lytle married Lily Pearl Dodson. Hayden Darling married Mae Hensley. All except John Franklin lived to be quite old and raised good sized families.
Thomas Jefferson was a rancher, and a farmer. In the early days after the family came to Williamson County, Thomas J. and his sons occasionally hauled freight for a brief time. He worked for Samuel Mather in Gabriel Mills (now Liberty Hill), who had founded a mill and store in the area, along with the Masonic Lodge. Later, T. J. raised horses for a while, and farmed.
Thomas Jefferson and two other men, T. S. Harvey, and W. P. Smart, sold four acres of land for the small sum of $5.00 to the N. Gabriel School, and gave the land in 1888.
The land originally purchased by Thomas Jefferson and Mariah Duncan is still owned by some of their descendants more than 110 years later, and some of them live on the property. The original home of T.J. and Mariah still stands and is owned by the descendants of Hayden, the youngest child. Many of their descendants still live in the central Texas area.
He died of Congestive Heart Failure at home, which they called "Dropsy" back in the day. He was buried in his Civil War Uniform.
