Harry Sumrall, a retired Maintenance supervisor for Allied Chemical with 32 years of service, passed away Monday May 6, 2013 at the Carpenter House.

A native of Baton Rouge and a resident of Baker, he was 89. Harry served his country with pride during WWII as a member of the U.S. Army Air Corp. as a member of the 505th Bomb Squadron. He was stationed at Tinian Island as an aircraft fueler. He helped refuel the B-29 Enola Gay for it's mission of dropping the first atomic bomb over Japan.

Visiting at Baker Funeral Home with religious services in the Chapel, conducted by Rev. Dennis Allen.

He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Beth Sumrall of Katy, TX and two daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Anthony Catanzaro of Port Allen and Vickie and Byron Broussard also of Katy. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Austin Sumrall, Michelle P. Gervais and husband Paul, Natalie and husband Buddy Glover, Melissa P. Mullis and husband Mark, Julie B Kilcrease and husband Wes, and Haley Broussard. Two step-daughters, Ashley Catanzaro Quaregna and husband Jared and Kelli Catanzaro and 10 great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 58 1/2 years, LaWanna Strickland Sumrall, four sisters, Cathleen Zammitt, Mae Otter Owen, Wilma "Dink" Thompson, twin-sister Helen Morphis and one brother, Reese Sumrall.

Harry was a pround member of the Baton Rouge Post #38 American Legion and member of the Baker V.F.W. Post #4224.

A special thanks to the staff of the TNCC unit of Our Lady of The Lake and to the staff of the Carpenter House.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donatons may be made to St. Joseph Hospice Foundation, 17732 Highland Rd., Suite G., Box 241, Baton Rouge, La. 70810.

He was a member of First Baptist Church of Baker.
