Uncle to Texas writer Robert E. Howard, W. V. was a son of G. W. Ervin and Sarah Jane Martin. A newspaper man for most of his life (with side dealings in real estate and other ventures), he published papers in several Texas counties, including Coke, Ellis, Borden, and Howard. Cemetery records say he is buried next to his son, Frank Wynton, though no headstone was ever erected. A curious note: On the 1930 Census form for the town of Marshall, we find W. V.'s other son, William V. Ervin, Junior, working as a clerk at a railway office. He is listed as the son of the head of household: William V. Ervin, Senior, a man who supposedly had died two years before. True, there are problems with the listing, both of their ages are wrong, for example, but not too wrong, and people weren't always truthful on the Census. This, and the lack of a headstone for W. V. -- wouldn't it be cool if Robert E. Howard's uncle faked his own death for some mysterious reason?
