(SURNAME SPELLED "STILLS" ON GRAVESTONE)

Born Rebecca Canfield c.1683 in New Haven, Connecticut, to Thomas and Rebecca (nee Camp), Mrs. Stiles was among the Connecticut colonists who later re-settled in New Jersey. She died there "in the 48th year of her age" in Stilestown (present day Montville), some 10 miles away from her grave in Whippany. The wife of Jonathan Stiles, the couple's children include John (c.1709-1777), Thomas (c.1711-1728), Rebecca (c.1719-1798), Ephraim (c.1722-1768), and Thankfull (c.1722-1728). Thomas and Thankfull, who died young, are interred here in the Whippany Burial Yard. Her husband, who remarried not long after her death, survived her by some 27 years.
The surname Stiles appears as "STILLS" on Rebecca's gravestone. Made of brown sandstone, it features a soul effigy of the death's head type in its tympanum, but unlike those of the young Stiles children buried nearby, is curiously devoid of the wings that usually embellish this mortality image.
