90, of Decatur, formerly of Herrin, died 4:44 a.m. Monday (Dec. 6, 1999) in Decatur Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday in Dawson & Wikoff West Wood Street Funeral Home. There will be no visitation. Burial will be in Macon County Memorial Park, Harristown. Memorials may be directed to the Herrin City Library.
Miss Sullivan was born on Oct. 14, 1909, in Vergennes, the daughter of Millard and Anna Manis Sullivan. She was a schoolteacher, retiring in 1974 after teaching for 34 years at Herrin High School, where she was head of the English department. She also sponsored cheerleaders, yearbook and prom committees for several years. Miss Sullivan was a member of the Herrin Women's Club for 61 years, National Council of Teachers of English, Herrin Education Association and Friends of the Herrin High School Library. She was a charter patron of the Herrin Civic Center, a member of the National Education Association and a member of the Illinois Education Association. She was a graduate of Southern Illinois University and received a master's degree at the University of Illinois. Her correspondence with a Dutch woman was the subject of a book, "Kisses from Hanna," published in 1996.
During World War II, Hanna and her husband were prisoners-of-war of the Japanese, and Ruth served as the go-between for Hanna and her parents in Nazi-held Holland.
Surviving are her sisters, Euvera Wade of Decatur, with whom she resided, and Emogene Nesheim of San Diego, Calif.; brother, Orville Sullivan of Tampa, Fla.; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Irene Brake of Mount Vernon.
