Augustus Clingman "Gus" Boyles, Jr. was born on June 8, 1903 in Eldorado, Montgomery Co., North Carolina. Named after his father, he was the son of Augustus Clingman "AC" Boyles, Sr (1867-1936) and Anna Elizabeth "Annie" Coggin (1864-1914), the last of their four known children, all sons. Both of Gus' parents are buried in Maplewood Cemetery located in Durham, Durham Co., NC.

Gus' father, "AC", a 1897 graduate of Baltimore University's School of Medicine, was a medical doctor. He was the son of Rev. Marcus Wrightman "M.W." Boyles (1842-1892) and Susan A. (Alice ?) Wood (1846-1895). His grandfather, Marcus, great-grandfather Joseph Adolphus Boyles (1816-1894) and GG-grandfather John Boyles II (1770-1843), were all "old-time" Methodist Episcopal (ME) circuit riding preachers. Joseph and John were also farmers. Gus' 4G-GF, William Boyles (1720-abt 1818), had immigrated to America from Ireland about 1738 with his older brother, Charles Boyles (1722-1813).

When Gus was just 9, his oldest brother, Henry Paul Boyles (1891-1910), died from typhoid fever while a 19 year student at Trinity College (now Duke University). Gus was only 13 when his mother died in the Dorothy Dix Hospital in Raleigh, NC in 1914 as the result of severe depression. His father left the medical profession about two years later but returned in 1929 as a contract physician for a granite mill in Mt. Airy, Surry Co., NC.

On Dec, 18, 1946 in Arlington, Virginia, Gus married Imogene Delores "Jean" Crowl (1920-2005). Gus was 46, Jean 25. Their marriage certificate showed Gus' occupation as a "tailor". It showed Jean's occupation as a "hostess" in a night club. The marriage proved to be a short one as they divorced in Polk Co., Florida about 3 years later (1949).

Gus, who never remarried, died from heart disease on Oct. 31, 1965 in Burlington, Alamance Co., NC at the age of 62. He is buried in Maplewood Cemetery, close to his parents and his brother, Henry Paul Boyles (1892-1910).
