"He entered the great battle of Gettysburgh, only to be severely wounded on the first day....  All day he lay upon the field, suffering from wounds that cost him a limb and one finger.  Upon his return to Mich. he engaged in the trade of a miller, following this work for many years....  Buying a farm in Kansas he removed there.  After a number of years there he removed to Spring Lake, MI to work a fruit farm.  Fourteen yars ago he returned to Plymouth to spend the last days of his earthly life.  In 1865 he united with the First Presbyterian church....  He was honored by being elected to the highest office in the church that it is possible for a layman to occupy, that of ruling Elder.  For several years he was secretary of the Board of Elders...."  -- Excerpts from his obituary.

Member of the Board of trustees of State Soldier's Home at Grand Rapids, appointed by Gov. Ferris.  Commander of Eddy Post, G.A.R. and secretary of Business Men's Club.

Civil War - Enlisted on 6 August 1862 at Plymouth, Wayne County, Michigan; he was residing at Plymouth prior to his enlistment at 22 years of age; mustered in on 15 August 1862, Company C, 24th Michigan Volunteer Infantry Regiment as a Sergeant; wounded (shot fracture, left leg, intermediary amputation in the lower third of the femur) in action during the Battle of Gettysburg, Adams County, Michigan on 1 July 1863; mustered out with disability on 16 October 1863 at Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan.
