John Holland Grantham, 81, passed away on March 6, 2006, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Augusta, Ga.
A native of Douglas, Ga., Mr. Grantham was born on August 7, 1924, and attended elementary school and high school in Douglas. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II in the 4105th Army Air Force Unit as an airplane & engine mechanic and gunner. He was stationed in England and flew in air raids over northern France and the Rhineland (Germany). For his service during the war he was awarded a U.S. Air Medal, EAME Ribbon with two bronze stars, American Theater Ribbon, and WWII Victory medal. Following the war he enrolled at the University of Georgia where he earned a degree in Agricultural Engineering. After graduation, he taught agriculture to South Georgia Farming Veterans, until 1951 when he was hired by the U.S. Army Signal School at Fort Gordon to teach electronics. He retired from the Signal School in 1980 as a Senior Supervisory Education Specialist in electronics and was one of only a few to obtain a GS-12 rating.
Mr. Grantham was an avid golfer and won numerous local golf tournaments including club championships at the Green Meadows and Fort Gordon golf clubs. He and his long time foursome held memberships at the Augusta Municipal Golf Course, Forest Hills Golf Association, Green Meadows Golf Club, Goshen Plantation Golf Club and Point South Golf Club. In addition to golf, he enjoyed fishing, tennis, traveling and was a staunch supporter of the University of Georgia Football Team. He especially enjoyed traveling with family and friends to see the bulldogs play in the Annual Georgia-Florida game in Jacksonville. He also enjoyed attending the Grantham-Holland Family reunion held annually in Douglas, Ga.
Mr. Grantham was a long time member of the Hephzibah Baptist Church, where he enjoyed attending Sunday school with his friends and neighbors.
Survivors include his sons, John Richard (Kyung Mi) Grantham, Martinez, Ga. and Steven Keith (Sandra Bailey) Grantham, Canton, Ga.; his sisters, Sarah Jean Veal, Douglas, Ga., Ruth Elaine Herring, Houma, LA., and Sylvia Hamby; his four step grandchildren, and his numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Grantham was preceded in death by his parents, Dewey Wesley Grantham and Mary Ellen Holland Grantham, daughter, Glynda Ann Grantham, brother, Dewey Wesley Grantham Jr., sisters, Mary Ellen Grantham Fletcher, Mescal Grantham Haskew, and Gail Grantham.
His son's would like to express their deepest appreciation for the faithful and loving care provided to their dad by his sister Mescal G. Haskew and her husband Frank B. Haskew, his cousin Lida Holland Rich, and the doctors, nurses and 5th floor staff at the Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home, during his eight year battle with Alzheimer's Disease.
Sims Funeral Home at 201 North Peterson Ave, Douglas, Ga. on Thursday, March 9, 2006 from 7- 9 p.m.. The funeral service will be held at the Sims Funeral Home in Douglas on Friday, March 10, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. followed by burial in the family plot at the city of Douglas Cemetery.
