Sherman E. Capehart, 86, St. Joseph, passed away Saturday, July 19, 2008, at a St. Joseph health care center.
Sherman was born March 16, 1922, in St. Joseph, where he lived most of his life.
He was a graduate of Savannah High School.
He served in the Navy during World War II and was an honorary member of Army National Guard in St. Joseph.
He retired in 1987 from Boehringer Ingelheim.
He served as a volunteer fireman in Illinois and was Santa Claus at East Hills for several years.
He was known as an artist, music lover and storyteller.
Sherman was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Anna (Eisiminger) Capehart; and two sons, Robert and Steven Capehart.
Sherman married Leona Cooper on Jan. 14, 1950, in Guilford, Mo. She survives of the home.
He is also survived by two daughters, Susan Capehart, Jefferson City, Mo.; and Mary Capehart, Kansas City, Mo.; sister, Doris Obermier, Springs, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Graveside service: 10 a.m. Tuesday at Ashland Cemetery, St. Joseph. Visitation will begin after 12 p.m. Monday at the Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel, St. Joseph, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday.
The family suggests memorial contributions to Open Door Food Kitchen, Second Harvest or a charity of the donor's choice.
