James Porter, Sr. was the son of Hezekiah Porter, Sr. and his first wife Hannah (Cowles) Porter. He was the grandson of Samuel and Hannah (Stanley) Porter, original proprietors of Hadley, Massachusetts.

James Porter, Sr. married Mabel Pitkin at Hartford, Connecticut 07 Jul 1720. She was a daughter of Roger and Hannah (Stanley) Pitkin of Hartford. James and Mabel (Pitkin) Porter were the parents of: James, Jr. b. 1721, Mabel b. 1724, Ruth b. 1726, Miriam b. 1728, John b. 1731, and Mary b. 1733.

James and his wife Mabel lived out their lives in what is now East Hartford, CT but prior to 1783 East Hartford did not exist as a seperate township, it was an integral part of Hartford. James, Sr. is buried within 4 feet of his brother Hezekiah Porter, Jr. His gravestone is severely deteriorated but his footstone remains intact.
