ABILENE -- Charles Asher Coleman, 95, passed away Thursday, April 25, 2013, in Abilene. He was born Dec. 3, 1917, in Pueblo, Colo., the son of Charles and Martha (Mullin) Coleman. In 1920, the family moved to Oakley, and then to Abilene in 1929. Growing up, he attended local schools and graduated from Abilene High School with the class of 1936. He had been employed as the junior high school custodian and then by the power plant south of Abilene. In 1942, Asher enlisted in the United States Army, serving in the European theater as a scout section sergeant in the 13th Armor Division, returning to Abilene in 1945. After the war, he returned to school and graduated from Kansas State Teachers College of Emporia in 1951, with a degree in industrial arts. After graduating, he married Isabelle Tart. The couple followed his 28-year teaching career in Florence, Augusta and Chapman, followed by 20 years in Fountain, Colo. Asher moved back to Abilene after Isabelle preceded him in death in 1987. On Aug. 18, 1987, he married Dorothy R. Sims. All of their married life was spent in Abilene. She preceded him in death in 2009. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Lois Muller. Asher was a member of Abilene First United Methodist Church, the VFW, American Legion and Kiwanis. He is survived by his son, Steven C. Coleman, of Wichita. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 30, at Abilene First United Methodist Church, with Annie Ricker officiating. Interment will follow in Abilene Cemetery. The casket will not be open at the church. The family suggests memorials in his name be made to Abilene First United Methodist Church.
