He was 25 when he enlisted on 4/23/1861 as a Private. On 4/27/1861 he mustered into "D" Co. OH 14th Infantry for 3 months of service, most of which was spent in campaigns against the Rebels in what is now West Virginia. He was Mustered Out on 8/13/1861 at Toledo, OH. He re-enlisted for 3-year service on 8/21/1861 as a Private. On 8/21/1861 he mustered into "E" Co. OH 14th Infantry. He took part in many battles including Chickamauga and Jonesboro. Jacob was captured near Stone Mountain, GA on 17 Nov 1864 and was reported erroneously as a deserter. He was paroled at Aiken's Landing, VA on 24 Feb 1865 and then sent from Camp Parole, MD and then to Camp Chase in Columbus, OH where he arrived 5 Mar 1865. He was furloughed the next day for 30 days, returned 26 Apr 1865, and sent to Provost Marshal in Columbus on 2 May 1865. He was Mustered Out on 7/11/1865 in Louisville, KY. He was promoted to Corporal on 1/1/1864.

From his Civil War Pension Files: In 1897, Jacob is at the State Soldiers Home, Cottage 9, Erie County, OH. He married Mary Jane Womsley (sp?) in Jan 1889 in Continental, OH--she claims he deserted her. He was previously married to Mary J. Lach who he claims deserted him about 1892 and has no knowledge of her whatever.
