EUGENIA "JEAN" FRANCES SWAIM
January 4, 1918 - November 1, 2014

Mrs. Swaim, 96, Centennial, formerly of Stockton, died Saturday. She was born in Cedar County to Merrill and Virna Nipps.

She attended Paseo High School in Kansas City, and later received her bachelor's of music degree from Augustana College in Rockport, Illinois. She was a gifted pianist and taught music in public schools in various locations in Kansas in the early part of her teaching career.

She married Roland Quinn Swaim Aug. 15, 1940, in Arkansas City, Kan. They were married 57 years until his death. During the time she was raising her children, she taught piano in the family home in Manhattan, Kan. and later in Illinois where she also resumed her career teaching music in the public schools in Bellwood, Illinois.

She is the author of "The Era of the One-Room School House in Cedar County, Missouri," which she wrote after she and her husband retired to their Ozark Haven home in Stockton, where they lived from 1980-99.

She was very active in church, and was a choir director and accompanist in many locations throughout her life. She lived for eight years in Lawton.

Survivors include three children, Lawrence Swaim and wife Rogelia of Angwin, California, Carol Blackard and husband Scott of Centennial, Colorado, and Susan Andrews and husband Mike of Lawton; five grandchildren; and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a sister, Marie Smith.

A service was held Monday, Nov. 3, in Centennial, Colorado, and burial will follow at a later date in Stockton City Cemetery in Stockton, Mo.
