Samuel was born in Maury, TN, although his Texas Death Certificate names Dallas, TX, as his birth place. He was the son of Robert M. Goad and Sarah Elvira Godwin.

Robert was b. 16 Jan 1827 Bedford, VA and d. 30 Apr 1864 on the Goad Farm on Knob Creek. Sarah was b. 29 Mar 1826 in Maury, TN. After Robert died she married James H. Pewett on 18 Jul 1866 when Samuel was 8 years old. Sarah Godwin Goad Pewett d. 19 Mar 1900 Maury,TN.

Samuel married Naomi Dodson on Christmas Day, 1878 in Maury, TN, is listed in Maury in the 1880 Census as a carpenter. On March 14th 1891, Samuel N. Goad signed the Family Temperance Pledge to "abstain from the use of all intoxicating drinks as a beverage." About 1895 he moved his family to Texas, where his daughter Gladys was born on Feb 1896 in Dallas County. Samuel and his family are listed in the 1900 Federal Census in Eagle Fort, Dallas, TX. In 1910 a S. N. (52) and Neome (49) Good and 4 of their children lived next to E. G. Goad family in Tarrant County, TX. But by 1920 the widowed Samuel N. Goad and 2 of his children had moved to a farm back in Dallas County.
