At the age of 78 years, Emanuel Maudlin died at his home in Republic. He was born in Posey County, IN December 25, 1838, was converted and united with the Methodist Church at the age of sixteen. At the age of twenty-one he was united in marriage with Alma Akins. To this union were born three children, two sons and a daughter, Ed Maudlin of Republic Ellis Maudlin of Granite Falls, Washington and Mrs. May Marshall of South Bend, Indiana.

Mr. Maudlin was a volunteer during the Civil War but unfortunately he had three fingers sawed off and was rejected. In 1870 he came west and filed on a homestead just north of the present city of Lovewell, Jewell County but In February, 1871, when he came to make the settlement he found a man named Walters building a cabin on the claim. Mr. Maudlin found another quarter section of land that suited him equally as well and settled on it. He had no team, but owned a white cow. Later he sold his claim for $600 and relocated on the farm that is now owned by Mr. Ledum.

Here, within two miles of White Rock a pioneer village, he started in anew prospered and united with the Baptist Church. When his son Ed married and started to do for himself, he sold his Jewell County farm, moved to Butte Mont. where he resided three years, then returned to South Bend, Indiana, where he continued to live until about two years ago when he came to Republic, Kansas where he resided until he was called home. Emanuel Maudlin and his estimable wife happed to be very close neighbors of the writer, and two nicer, dearer old people never lived than they.

The funeral services were conducted at the M. E. Church by Rev. Geo. Hall of Garden City, Iowa.
