At the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. John Simmons, five miles southwest of Republic, Saturday evening at six o'clock, occurred the death of Mrs. Alma Maudlin. Alma Akins was born at Mishawaka, Indiana, 1842, and was united in marriage to Samuel Maudlin in 1860. To this union were born three children; Edward Maudlin (deceased) of Republic, Mrs. May Marshall, South Bend, Ind., Ellis Maudlin, Granite Falls, Washington. Other than her two children she leaves to mourn her loss a brother at Denver, Colo., and a sister, Mrs. Hiltman of Webber, Kansas, besides other relatives and friends. She was converted early in life and united with the M.E. Church and has lived a faithful and consistent life. With her husband she homesteaded five miles from White Rock in Jewell county, Kansas in 1871. She taught the first school in that neighborhood at her home, which was a sod house. She was 83 years old at the time of her death. The funeral was conducted by Rev. Parrott at the M. E. church. She was laid to rest by the side of her husband who preceded her in death December, 1916. Interment was made in the Lake Cemetery. - Republic City News.
