Jerry Lee Cockerell Sr., 75 of Midland, went home to be with his Heavenly Father surrounded by his beloved wife and family on Tuesday, April 23, 2013.

He was born on March 10, 1938 in Breckenridge, Texas to the late Archie Lee and Georgia Power Cockerell.

He joined the National Guard in the Army. He received 2 honorable discharges. He was stationed at Ft. Jackson, North Carolina in 1959. In 1962 he was stationed in Fort Polk, Louisiana.

He met the girl of his dreams and was married on November 27, 1959 in Ovalo, Texas at Ovalo Baptist Church. He was a rancher and married a farmer's daughter.

Jerry never met a stranger; he was always helping his friends, the church, boy scouts, girl scouts and Little League. He like to spend all the time he could with his family, going fishing, camping, never missed his boys ball games or even the girls playing baseball. Anything the church needed for the kids he would make sure he could get the kids a little trailer to carry all their things in the summer to church camp. When the church needed the fellowship and hall carpeted, Jerry went out and came back with a trailer loaded with carpet and had it put in.

Jerry worked hard in the oilfield and drove trucks and worked for Drilco in the 60's. In the 70's he was in the office and traveled for Drilco to Canada, New York, and North and South Dakota. He then worked for Gibson's as a shipping and receiving manager in the late 70's.
The next 10 to 20 years, he owned and operated his car lot business, Mid-Tex Auto Sales.

In limited words, Jerry was the best man we ever knew, the best husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother uncle and friend. He will be greatly missed.

Jerry is survived by his beloved wife Janette; his children, Wayne Cockerell and his children, Talmage, Bobbie and JC Prewitt; Jerry Cockerell Jr. and wife Christine and their children, Shane, Cassie and Travis; Janet Thomas and husband Jeff and their children, Shawn, Kyle and Trent; Sandy Smith and husband Tim and their children, Jacob, Brittany, Joshua and Brooke and Misti Tatsch, who was raised as a daughter, and husband Chris and their children Kylee, Kynlee and Kynden all from Midland.

He is also survived by his sister, Ruth Heath of Grand Prairie, Texas; two nieces, Johnnie Karen Jones and Carolyn and Roger Kleen all of Grand Prairie, Texas; his cousin Curtis Cockerell and wife Carolyn of Midland and other numerous nieces and nephews.

We would like to thank Dr. Gregory Bartha for all the care he has done for Jerry over the years and Dr. Oliver, the kidney doctor. To the senior care for all the nurses, staff who really cared and were there for Jerry so many times; Aquilla, Sam, Anautia, Bri, Kayla, Caroline, Kim, Celia, Janice, Juliet, etc…and of course, Bessie. Jerry enjoyed helping and doing all projects along her side.

He served as president over the residents at Senior Care over the last 5 years. He called Bingo and liked to help with fundraisers. He loved just sitting outside enjoying the sun. Jerry loved his pets, Biscuit, Brutus, Peanut, TJ, Sugar, Bambi and most recent, Maggie. Of course along the years, Jerry had many special friends and buddies that were there sharing special events, working together and sharing life's good times- Tom Branham, Leonard Riflard, Jim Newby, Bobby Hennis, Bub Hull, Earl Salem, etc.

Today we honor Jerry Cockerell, he was our hero and our rock. He was a member of Ranchland Baptist Church, where he served as a treasurer and seated for a Deacon of the church for many years. We want to thank in advance, Robert Kepple and Gary Douglas for officiating.

Viewing will be today from 12:00pm to 6:00pm with a receiving of friends from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at Lewallen-Garcia-Pipkin Funeral Home. Services for Jerry will be Friday, April 26, 2013 at 1:00pm at Ranchland Heights Baptist Church, 3203 SCR 1211. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park.
