Mary Sue Walker Adkinson, 72, of Fitzgerald, Georgia, died Thursday, April 25, 2013, at Heritage Healthcare of Fitzgerald.

Funeral services will be held 11 AM, Monday, April 29, 2013, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Wilcox County, with the Rev. James Faircloth and the Rev. Tom Camp officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 7 to 9 at the funeral home in Fitzgerald.

Mrs. Adkinson was born August 25, 1940, in Wilcox County, to the late John Carey and Lessie Hunter Walker. She graduated from Abbeville High School in 1959. She was retired from the Bank of Fitzgerald, Nations Bank and also Wilcox County State Bank with 25 years service as a teller and customer service representative. While employed with the Bank of Fitzgerald, she received the Outstanding Customer Service Award. Mrs. Adkinson also organized and directed the Miss Colony City Sweetheart Pageant and she served on the local board of directors for the American Heart Association. Being a pastor's wife, she was involved in many areas of the church. She was the Youth Director for over 20 years, taught Bible classes, served as Director for Women's Missionary Union, coached the women's church softball league, sang in the choir and she also sang special music. She was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church.


She is survived by her children: Tony (Sherry) Adkinson, Terry (Pat) Adkinson and Tim (Regina) Adkinson, all of Fitzgerald; eight grandchildren: Wesley Adkinson, Wade Adkinson, Nicole Adkinson, Dustin Adkinson, Clint Adkinson, Dianna Adkinson, Casey Jo Huang and Justin Sumner; five great-grandchildren: Hayleigh Adkinson, Ricki Adkinson, Hunter Garner, Adalyn Adkinson and Ryder Adkinson; four sisters: Shelby (Warren) Tanner of Jacksonville, Florida, June (Don) Morris of Fitzgerald, Carol (Harold) McKie of Abbeville and Judy (Arnie) Nelms of Fitzgerald as well as numerous nieces and nephews. The family also wishes to thank Bell Jones, Mrs. Adkinson's faithful caregiver, for her assistance. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband: Rev. Lawrence Adkinson; four brothers: Earl Walker, Mack Walker, James Walker and Robert Walker and three sisters: Dorothy Walker May, Exa Walker Bennett and Lynn Walker Sanford.
