Civil War Union Army Soldier. He was mustered in as a Private in Company E, 115th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on December 5, 1861. He was promoted to Hospital Steward, Field and Staff, the same day, serving until he was discharged due to disability in September 1862.

On June 25, 1880 he filed for a US Army Invalid Veteran Pension (Application #386277, Certificate #322589).

On April 19, 1904 his wife, Emma Grove, filed for a US Army Widow's Pension (Application #804416, Certificate #582638, PA).
