Tragedy Occurs ear Indiana-Michigan Line; Believe Man Was On Way to Visit Sister.
POLICE NET TO NAB DEATH DRIVER FAILS

CHESTERTON, Dec. 12 -- Alva Collins, of this city, was to have been thirty-seven years old today, but Fate decreed that he was not to live to celebrate the anniversary. He was the victim of a hit-and-run driver last night about 6 o'clock.

Details of the accident are unknown. Relatives here are not certain as to where the life-long Porter county resident was bound for, but apparently he was hitch-hiking on his way to visit his sister, Mrs. Floyd Kendall, at Benton Harbor, Mich.

While walking or standing along U. S. Highway 112, west of New Buffalo, Mich., last night, he was struck by a motor vehicle. The offender escaped the scene of the accident. New Buffalo police, who investigated the tragedy, expressed the opinion that a truck driver was responsible. It was not stated on what grounds they based their theories.

Michigan state police spread an alarm advising officers in this vicinity to be on the lookout for the hit-run driver. Gary police threw a blockade around the entrances of their city, but after several hours abandoned it after they were unsuccessful in apprehending a suspect.

According to relatives in Chesterton Collins left the city Sunday morning. After hitch-hiking his way to Michigan City, to spend the day with a brother, Earl, he left Monday morning, but did not state his destination.

The accident victim was born December 12, 1902, in Woodville. He resided on the family homestead until two years ago when his mother died. Since that time he has lived with a brother, Amos, in Chesterton. His father, Charles, during the same period has resided with a sister, Mrs. Everett Wise, of Liberty Center.

Collins has been employed at the Roy Linderman nursery in Liberty township, for some time. He was a bachelor.

H. A. Flynn, of the Flynn Undertaking parlors, at Chesterton, went to New Buffalo this afternoon to call for the body. Burial will in all probability be held from the Flynn chapel Thursday afternoon, it was stated, but final arrangements are still incomplete. Burial is to be in the family lot in the Chesterton cemetery.

Surviving in addition to the family7 members named above are one brother, Russell of Chesterton, and one sister, Mrs. Arthur Rinker, also of this city.
