Evelyn Adena Freeman, the daughter of Aaron and Ida Abrahamson Johnson, was born April 17, 1916 in Page County, Iowa east of Nyman. She died Saturday, March 11, 2000 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital, Red Oak, Iowa, at the age of 83 years, 10 months, and 23 days.
She was raised and attended country school in the Nyman area, then attended High School in Red Oak. She was united in marriage to Carl A. Freeman on January 13, 1937 at Red Oak. They first lived on a farm southwest of Red Oak and also near Essex In 1941 they moved to a farm near Red Oak, where they have lived for 57 years. Evelyn moved into Red Oak in 1998 after the death of her husband, Carl. She was baptized and confirmed in the Fremont Lutheran Church at Nyman. She later became a member of the First Covenant Church in Red Oak, where she taught Sunday School and was an active member. She had served as a camp craft director. She was active in Montgomery County Farm Bureau Women, being selected as Homemaker of the Year in 1962. Evelyn was a past 4-H leader and committee woman. She was active in many organizations, such as Christian Women's Club, food pantry, and many church activities. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband on March 9, 1998, a son Darrell, a brother, Lee, and a sister Hazel.
Evelyn is survived by a daughter, Karen Bass of Plymouth, Minnesota, sons, Lawrence Freeman and his wife Bea of Homewood, Illinois, Donovon Freeman and his wife Barbara of Andover, New Hampshire, and Carroll Freeman and wife Juanita of Red Oak; eight grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, a brother, Lehmann Johnson and his wife Lucille of red Oak, Iowa, nieces, nephews, and other relatives along with many friends.
