James Abraham Allen was born on 24 September in either 1856 or 1857; his headstone states 1857, but census records suggest that 1856 was more likely. His parents were Abraham and Jane (Kinnibrugh) Allen. James grew up on a farm in Washington County, Arkansas and became a farmer himself in his earlier years.

James married Sarah Elizabeth Pettigrew on 16 March 1881 in Washington County, Arkansas. They had five children: Ida Belle (1882-1913), Hugh Abraham (1884-1963), Frank Chesley (1886-1971), Lloyd Lemuel (1890-1922), and Margaret Kinney "Madge" (1893-1985).

In the early 1900's the family relocated to the Los Nietos and Whittier areas of Los Angeles County, California. Probably as a result of this move, James changed occupations and became a teamster, which meant he hauled goods with a horse-driven wagon.

By 1930 James was retired and living with his daughter Margaret and her husband, Walter Levi Marshall.

Most of the family is buried in Rose Hills Memorial Park, Whittier, California.
