Chesapeake, VA - Evelyn M. Shaffer (Hershberger) has been called home to god in the early hours of December 30, 2020.

Evelyn was born, Evelyn Marie Hershberger in York, Pennsylvania on February 28, 1932 to her parents, Joseph C. Hershberger and Margie A. (Ziegler) Hershberger.

Evelyn is survived by her husband Millard (Mike) M. Shaffer, grandchildren Kelly and James and wife Chastity, and great-grandchildren Alexandra, Mark, Nicholas (Frey), Karalyne, Gabrielle and Samantha. She was preceded in death by her parents, her son Mark, brothers Joseph and Francis Hershberger, and sisters Jeanette Klinedinst and Marian Saltzgiver.

Evelyn graduated from William Penn Senior High School in 1950 and attended York College. Evelyn and Mike married January 1, 1951. Evelyn worked as a self-employed seamstress specializing in custom draperies and furniture slipcovers. Through her life, she and Mike traveled to all 50 states, Canada, Australia, Tasmania and Fiji in addition to 14 cruises to various destinations.

She was a member of the York County Fire Police and was active in the York County Republican party campaigning for Bill Goodling. Evelyn was involved with the Township government and organized a number of activities advocating for the preservation of natural resources and the wildlife in the area. Growing up in York City helped her appreciate country life on the farm in Druck Valley with Mike and Mark and later, her grandchildren. She had a strong love for horses, cats, dogs and gardening. Evelyn loved to be social and had friends as far away as New South Wales, Australia.

Evelyn was an active member of the Druck Valley United Methodist Church including the Lady's Auxiliary, until moving to Chesapeake, Virginia in 2020.

A viewing will be held Friday, January 8, 2021 from 9:30-11:00 a.m. at the Etzweiler-Koller Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 2000 West Market Street, York. Graveside services will be held on Friday, January 8, 2021 at 12:00 Noon at Mummerts Meetinghouse Cemetery, 403 Mummert's Church Road, Abbottstown, PA. For those attending the viewing and service, masks and social distancing are required.
