Millard (Mike) M. Shaffer has been called home to God in the afternoon of January 16, 2023. Mike was born in Seven Valleys, PA January 14, 1927 to Edwin E Shaffer and Catherine E. (Lentz) Shaffer. Mike is survived by his daughter-in-law Juanita (Stouch) Shaffer, grandson and wife James and Chastity Shaffer, granddaughter Kelly Shaffer, great-grandchildren Alexandra, Mark, Karalyne, Gabrielle, Samantha and Nicholas (Frey), and sister Betty (Ruppert). He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Evelyn, son Mark, brothers Orrin, Philip and Leroy and sisters Phyliss, Mary, Dora, Stella and Frances. Mike left school after 6th grade to work on the family farm planting crops and caring for 42 dairy cattle. He worked for M.H. Gilbert until joining the US Army and serving in the 159th Laundry Detachment in Okinawa for 11 months at the back end of World War II. Mike was a hard worker managing his own farm and working as an Oxy-Acetylene welder for Lyon Metal products until they closed the York, PA facility and he was left unemployed. He worked various other jobs from security guard to handyman until spending his last few working years at the Stanley Tool Plant in West Manchester Township where he retired. Mike loved to travel and has been to all 50 states, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Tasmania and various ports of call on 14 different cruises. On his own farm with his son Mark and wife Evelyn by his side he raised and traded horses, cared for dogs, goats and cats and could grow anything from corn in the field to pineapples and bananas in his indoor garden. He and Mark were active volunteer fireman and Mike served as Assistant Fire chief at Pleasureville Fire Department and was captain of the Springettsbury Township Fire Police. He took pride in serving the community and was an active member of the Druck Valley United Methodist Church until moving to Chesapeake Virginia in 2020. Mike had a connection with nature and was often found talking with and making friends with the white-tail deer and various birds that frequented his back porch.
