Sherman Cooper Sparks Sr., 100, formerly of Upperco, Md., died Sunday, October 3, 2004, at Carolyn Croxton Slane Residence in Harrisburg. He was the husband of the late Helen Elizabeth Martin Sparks.

Born May 21, 1904 in Baltimore County, Md., he was the son of the late Theodore Clarence Sparks and Laura Mandelia Cooper Sparks. Mr. Sparks and his late wife owned/operated Sparks Store for over 75 years. He was a charter member of Grace Baptist Church and the Gideons International.

He is survived by a daughter, Adele Brix of Mechanicsburg; three sons, Loring T. Sparks Sr. and David L. Sparks both of Upperco, Md.; Hayden L. Sparks of Frederick, Md.; 13 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by brothers and sisters, Richard Sparks, William Sparks, Clarence Sparks, Bernice Merryman, Missouri Michael, Elsie Lloyd and Hilda Sparks.

A service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Grace Bible Church, 3253 Charmil Dr., Manchester, Md. The Rev. Paul Wenzel will officiate. Burial will be in Grace U.M. Cemetery in Upperco, Md. Visitation will be Wednesday from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Eline Funeral Home, 934 S. Main St., Hampstead, Md. and Thursday from 10 a.m. until start of service at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Gideons International, P.O. Box 1000, Westminster, MD 21158; or to Grace Bible Church, 3253 Charmil Dr., Manchester, MD 21102.
