Y.P. Burgan united with the Methodist Episcopal Church at the age of twelve, as the family faith. What is believed to be the first religious services within the local township were organized by Mr. Burgan in the log home of Circuit Rider, Rev. Benjamin Crist preaching. The entire family were charter members of the Pleasant Grove Methodist Episcopal Church.
Y.P. suffered palsy more than thirteen years. Died February 28, 1899. Of a family of nine children he was survived by three brothers and one sister living in Indiana, a brother William H. Burgan of Pleasant Grove, also wife Elizabeth, and three sons.
Services at the Pleasant Grove Methodist Church he had founded. Burial Union Cemetery [Pleasant Grove Cemetery].
