History - Samuel and his wife Caroline moved their family to a small town of farmers, Groveland, Massachusetts , in 1832. In 1840, nearly all members of their family joined the Mormon Church. That same year a branch was organized and meetings were held in their home.
They left for Utah in 1850. Upon their arrival in the Valley, they camped at the Old Fort for a few days. They lived in Salt Lake about 10 years, surviving the cricket war and the Johnstons Army problems. Samuel served on the first police force in the valley. He was an officer in the Nauvoo Legion also.
In 1861, he moved his family to Southern Utah at the call of President Young. Settling at Virgin City, they built up a farm and stayed there until 1866. His wife became midwife and nurse for the women in the area.
In 1866 his farm and home were completely washed away in the flood and they were advised to move to St. George. Samuel purchased a home there and worked as a shoemaker most of the rest of his life.
