Howard Dean Kelley, 81, died on Tuesday, April 16, 2013. Dean was a faithful servant to his Lord and Savior and now occupies the place He prepared for him (John 14: 2-3).
Funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. Sat. April 20, 2013 at Hillside Christian Church 6100 Soncy. Burial will be at Llano Cemetery.
Dean was born August 19, 1931, in Amarillo to Howard and Ruby Kelley. He attended Tucumcari high School and Amarillo College before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force where he served his country for 4 years. Dean then attended West Texas State University and graduated with a degree in Communications.
Dean attacked life with passion and sincerity. He served his community well and especially enjoyed his affiliations with Amarillo Chamber of Commerce, WTSU, Kids Inc., Special Olympics, and the Tri-State Fair. he was gifted with a beautiful voice that he loved to share and which aided his early broadcasting career and let to 3 gospel albums. he had lead roles with the play "Texas" in its early years and say at countless weddings, funerals, and even the Miss Texas pageant. Dean was proud of his work as a disc jockey, sports broadcaster, and emcee of many local events.
Dean was preceded in death by his parents, sister Patsy Hutto, and son Dean Kelley, Jr. In honor of his son, he began the Dean Kelley, Jr. Memorial Run to raise money for Kids Inc. and a college scholarship fund for local students.
He is survived by his close friend Judy Kelley of Amarillo; a son, Kyle Kelley and wife Amy of Sunnyvale, TX; a son, Dr. ken Glasco and Frederick of Mout Isa, Australia; daughters, Cheryl Coperude of Houston, Shanna Hardesty and husband George of Denton and Karmi Seton and husband Dave of Grants Pass, Oregon; 2 brothers, Billey Kelley of Amarillo and Darrell Kelley of Penn.; sister, Jackie Tarter of KY, grandchildren, Megan, Ryan, Delphine, Guillame, Katie, Courtney, Caleb, Maggie, and Maura.
The family suggests memorials be to the Dean Kelley, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund, in care of Happy State Bank, 3423 S. Soncy Road, Amarillo,
TX 79119.
Dean loved to sing the National Anthem and graciously accepted any offer to perform it, including requests from the Texas Rangers baseball club. His Bible notes his love for the song title, "When I'm Gone - Will Anyone Know I've Been Here?" Yes, dear loved one, we know.
