Gordon Oscar Benitz, 74, entered his eternal resting place on April 27 in Springfield, Mo.

He was born on Aug. 29, 1930, in Wathena, Kan., to Oscar F. and Agnes A. Benitz, the youngest of four children.

A brother and sister preceded him in death, and his oldest sister, Mildred Staudenmaier, resides in St. Joseph, Mo.

He was born and raised in eastern Kansas and western Missouri until graduating from high school at 16 and joining the U.S. Army in 1948. He served in the Army National Guard, 69th Infantry Brigade, for 21 years, retiring as a major in 1970. During that time he was a fixed wing and helicopter pilot and was called to serve in active duty at Fort Carson, Colo., as a signal officer during the Vietnam era.

He married Helen Rosemary Peterson of Halfway, Mo., on May 6, 1954. He spent most of his adult life working in the banking industry in Ottawa, Kan., Richmond, Mo., Greeley and Morgan, Colo., and Lincoln and Pawnee City, Neb.

Gordon and Rosie retired to Bolivar, Mo., in 1991, where he has served as a volunteer at the Polk County Senior Center helping individuals file taxes. He was an active member in his church, Zion Lutheran Church in Bolivar and served on the Board for SMOA.

He is survived by his wife, Rosemary; two daughters and a son, Vicki (Larry) Helling of St. Louis, Nancy (Jim) Coffin of Cheyenne, and Gary (Jody) Benitz of Stuttgart, Germany; five grandchildren, Megan, Sarah, Scott, Katie and Emilie; five nieces and six great-nieces and nephews.

Services were held Saturday at Zion Lutehran Churcn in Bolivar, Mo. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery in Bolivar.
