Hulon Brasier Brown, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, lawyer, cattle farmer and friend to many, passed away peacefully Monday, April 15, 2013, in Jacksonville. He was born July 8, 1920, in nearby Griffin to George and Sallie Brown, and graduated from Jacksonville High School in 1937. He attended Lon Morris College for two years before obtaining a degree in business administration from The University of Texas. The outbreak of World War II led to his entering Midshipman's school. He then served as gunnery officer aboard a destroyer escort in both the Pacific and Atlantic. Returning to Austin after the war he married Elizabeth "Betty" Sames of Laredo in 1947, completed law school and was admitted to the Bar in 1951. While at The University of Texas he was a member of the national championship debate team and the Delta Theta Phi law fraternity.
Having moved to Midland after obtaining his law degree, he served with distinction in the Texas Legislature as state representative in 1953, and also served as county attorney for Midland County. He returned to Jacksonville in 1957. Beginning in 1961 he served eight years as district attorney for the Second Judicial District comprised of Cherokee, Angelina and Nacogdoches counties. He then became an untiring advocate for countless souls who found their way to his law office. He was a friend of both great and small but always seemed most at home with those of humble estate.
His gift of storytelling and sense of humor made him welcome at many a café table and as a public speaker. His love of acting led to being named State's Best Male Actor in 1939 while at Lon Morris College studying under the legendary Zula Pearson. He later played roles in productions at the Cherokee Civic Theater. He played softball well past the age at which most men have retired to the bleachers, and he enjoyed watching his great-grandchildren play baseball in his later years. He was a member of Central Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Alan, Hayden, Edwin and Glenn Brown; and a sister, Pauline Bostick.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 66 years, Betty Brown, of Jacksonville; three sons, Roland Brown and wife Gayle, of Wimberley, Alan Brown and wife Jeanette, of Tyler, and Marshall Brown and wife Robin, of Jacksonville; eight grandchildren, Christopher Brown, Timothy Brown, Betsy Brown Mosley, Ginger Brown, Kevin Brown, Courtney Brown Womble, Collin Brown and Shannon Brown Robinson; nine great-grandchildren, Whitney Robinson, Brady Robinson, Nicole Robinson, Aubrey Grace Mosley, Joshua Ryan Brown, Emily Renee Brown, Cooper Alan Womble, Preston Michael Womble and Madelyn Joyce Brown; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, April 19, 2013, at Autry Funeral Home Chapel, Jacksonville, with Dr. Paul Powell, Dr. Darin Wood and the Rev. Steve Edwards officiating.
Interment will follow in Griffin Cemetery near Troup.
Pallbearers will be Christopher Brown, Timothy Brown, Kevin Brown, Collin Brown, Roy Brown and Wayne Brown.
Honorary pallbearers will be John Ament, Dr. Charles Creed, Stacy Davis, Frank Goodson, Candido Hernandez, Ignacio Ramirez, Sam Brown Jr. and Frank Dublin.
