John served in the Mexican War as a doctor in the regiment of Winfield Scott. He was also a Regiment doctor in the Civil War (47th Kentucky Infantry) where he was brought up on charges for the unsanitary conditions at his regiment's camp (doctors were responsible for this at the time). He held the rank of Lt. Colonel. He had studied medicine in London, England. After the war he settled in Hazard, Kentucky, later died in Lee County, KY.
