Joseph was the second son of Daniel Beets, Sr and Sarah Altum Beets. Joseph married Margaret Ann (Peggy/Mary) Kirk on 29 Nov 1849 in Knox County, Tennessee. They had these children: Sarah Elizabeth b. 18 March 1851 who married Charles H. M. Johnson; Ritta Ellen, who married James McCarrell, then second to Alexander Walden; Elen (Louisa T), b. 1859; John Westley Beets b. 31 Aug 1852, who married first Susan A. Kirkpatrick and second Lucinda A. Kirkpatrick; Joseph Anderson b. 30 July 1854 and married Nancy; Dock b. 15 Oct 1856 and married Margaret Ellen Stansbury; Daniel Beets b. ca 1860 and married Lucy (Mary); Thomas b. 10 Oct 1864 who married first Mary Elizabeth Jones and second Mary Foley, and third Bette Centers; Rufus Beets b. Nov 1865 and married Julia Walden; George Washington ; b. 14 Nov 1867 married first Nanie Walden (Gilbert) and second Margaret Marie Jones; Samuel Franklin b. 14 Feb 1872 married Lydia Mae Adams.
