William Henjes Sr. - Wet Mountain Tribune - March 5, 1954 - Funeral Services Held Here for Valley Pioneer - William Henjes, Sr., Came Here with Colony in 1870 - Funeral services for William Henjes, Sr., 88, a pioneer of the Valley, were held last Saturday afternoon at Hope Lutheran Church, with the Rev. O. F. Kretzmann conducting. Mr. Henjes died last Tuesday at the home of his daughter in Pueblo after a brief illness. Born December 1, 1865 in Baltimore, Maryland, he moved to Chicago, Illinois with his parents and in 1870, the family joined the group of colonists who came to the Wet Mountain Valley and settled near Colfax. Mr. Henjes engaged in farming and ranching in the Valley for many years. He was married to Miss Minnie Ackelbein on October 28, 1894, his wife preceding him in death about 20 years ago. With his parents, he became a charter member of Hope Lutheran Church, organized in 1872, and had retained his membership in his church until his death. He is survived by two sons, William, of Westcliffe, and Joseph, of McClave; four daughters, Mrs. Laura Voss and Mrs. Herbert Knuth, of Pueblo, and Mrs. Alfrieda Dodson and Mrs. Walter Miller, of Colorado Springs; 19 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Burial was in Hope Lutheran cemetery in the Valley, with the Valhalla Funeral Home of Pueblo in charge.
