A Civil War veteran, he served two terns of service:
1. Enlisted with a group from Schuylkill County, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg April 18, 1861, as a private with Co. D, 25th Pennsylvania Infantry, transferred to Co. D June 3, 1861, and honorably discharged with his company July 26, 1861, having seen no combat.
2. Enlisted in Pottsville September 2, 1861, mustered into federal service there September 23 as a private with Co. B, 96th Pennsylvania Infantry, but deserted at Gettysburg July 2, 1862, even though the regiment was not heavily engaged there.
He married Mary Hand and fathered the children you see linked below. By 1870, he was a miner living with his family in Williamstown, Dauphin County, where he died from "dilatation of the heart" with "paralysis & old age" contributing factors. Both he and Mary applied for pensions but were denied presumably because of the outstanding desertion charge.
