His father was Major Joseph Crary(1758-1810) who was a surveyor in the Revolution & afterwards in Vermont, & New York counties of Herkimer, Jefferson & Lewis. Joseph's parents were Roger Crary & Mary Webster.

His mother Mary Proctor(1770-1853), daughter of Lt. Leonard Proctor(1734-1827) & his wife Mary Keep(-1827)
