His parents came to this county in 1831. he attended Denmark Academy at the age of 16 or 17, he began teaching district schools in the winter. He took up the study of medicine & was a graduated from the College of Physicians & Surgeons at Fairfield 1/30/1837. His practice was begun at Sugar Grove, Pa., but in 1842 he removed to Farmersville, NY where he remained for 18 years. In 1860 he located in Ellicottville, NY and he engaged in the drug business, which he finally sold & then he returned to active practice of his chosen profession.

Dr. Stewart was a charter member of the new County Medical Society & has been it's President, Vice president, Secretary, Treasurer & Censor. he has been a member of the Board of Pension Examiners 7 was for several years a Surgeon for the B. R. & P. RY.

Ellicottville has sustained a great loss in the death of Dr Stewart, who has been so prominently identified with interests & history of the town for the past 40 years. He was a man of sterling worth, of strict integrity & honor, whose name was a synonym of honesty. To those in need he was ever ready to extend a helping hand. Very few people were aware of the extent of his benefactions, for he was not a man who boasted of his good deeds; indeed it was seldom that people, aside from the one to whom his aid was extended in time of need, ever learned of the act , unless by chance.

The editors of this paper were close personal friends of Dr Stewart. He was a frequent, indeed almost daily visitor & many of his benefactions came under their personal observation & knowledge. only those with whom he became in close contact, who knew the details of his everyday life, did or could know of his great kindness of heart. he was well read in medicine, politics & general events of the day & his mind was a store house of knowledge. He was an interesting conversationalist. He continued the practice of medicine up to the time of his last illness, despite the infirmities of age. He had a large & varied experience in battling with disease, death & felt that he had no right to deny his fellow man with the benefits of what ever good he might do.

Services were held at St. John's Church, yesterday afternoon at 1 o'clock, the Rev. Gilbert W Laidlaw of Fall River, Massachusetts, reading the burial service, after which the remains were laid to rest in Sunset Hill Cemetery.
