He married Pearl Butler about 1903. They had seven children, four sons and three daughters: (1) Carl, (2) Floyd, (3) Helen, (4) Marjorie, (5) Forest, (6) Harriet, (7) Howard. They were residents of Galion, Ohio, where John and Pearl lived out their lives.
In 1910, John was a drayman and buggy worker. By 1920, he was a brakeman for Erie Railroad, and by 1930, he was a steam railroad conductor.
John was widowed in 1848. He lived another seventeen years and died at age 84.
