FRANCES FITZGERALD
February 22, 1926 - April 6, 2013
Resided in Apple Valley, CA

Frances Fitzgerald of Apple Valley passed way last Saturday night at the age of 87 after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born in Jemez, New Mexico in 1926 and raised in the small town of Pecos, New Mexico. After High School, she joined the order of The Sisters of Divine Providence and graduated from Our Lady of the Lake college in San Antonio.

She spent 15 years as a nun and teacher serving underprivileged children throughout Texas and Mississippi. She left the convent in 1958. After leaving the convent, Frances met and later married her husband John W. Fitzgerald, in 1960. They had three beautiful children, John, Rita and Frances. She and her family traveled around the world with the Navy. Frances was happy to use her education skills in teaching English to students in Japan. After John retired from they Navy, they settled in Apple Valley in 1971. Frances Fitzgerald was a long time fixture at Our Lady of the Desert Catholic church.

She was famous for her warm welcomes and greetings to both new attendees and regulars alike. It was there she served the parish as a Eucharistic Minister, President of the Catholic Daughters of America and acted in the Ministry of Hospitality. Frances was a force unto herself as a teacher at Juniper Elementary School in Hesperia. Over the span of 18 years, she taught and served generations of school children in the Hesperia area. She fondly recalled the many times she bumped into now-grown students who would stop her in the street and thank her for her service.

Frances is survived by her husband, John W. Fitzgerald; her children John, Rita, and Frances; and 4 grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 11th 4pm-8pm at Sunset Hills Memorial Park & Mortuary in Apple Valley with Rosary at 6pm. Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 12th 9am at Our Lady of the Desert Catholic church in Apple Valley with reception following. Burial will follow at Desert View Memorial Park, Victorville, California. Sunset Hills Memorial Park and Mortuary is handling the arrangements. Updated service information and a on line guest book are available at sunsethills.cc. Published in the Daily Press on April 10, 2013.
